For over thirty years I worked designing systems, interpreting laws and solving complex problems. Over time I discovered all those disciplines shared the same purpose: understanding how people work.
Today I do exactly the same thing. I just changed the language. Now I write novels.

Writing is not about inventing characters. It is about discovering what remains human when everything else changes.

A conversation with J.G. Varela
When did you start writing?
Although I was always a constant reader — two or three books a month — I never imagined I would end up writing.
Everything changed in 2025, while I was having daily conversations with my son Jhean Paul, who was working on a book about eugenics for a British publisher. For almost three years we talked about history, science, culture and literature.
One day he discovered that the house he lived in had been a funeral home for over three hundred years. I remember thinking immediately: "There is a story here." That was the moment I understood I had to write too.
Why thriller?
Because the story chose it.
I didn't plan to write a thriller. The town, its secrets, its history and its atmosphere ended up becoming one. I simply followed the path the story itself was showing me.
Why law?
Because a business partner tried to take advantage of me.
I understood that knowing the law was also a way to protect the work of a lifetime. Over time I discovered that law is not only useful for resolving conflicts. It also helps you understand people better.
What does editing a book mean?
My greatest school was working alongside Uyaní.
When she handed me the first manuscript of The Three Kisses of Death, I quickly understood that if I tried to edit it like any other text we would probably end up divorced. Every correction was an argument. Every word carried enormous emotional weight.
Years later we tried again. We made an agreement: she gave me complete freedom to work on the manuscript, and in return, we both remembered that no book is worth more than a lifetime relationship.
Editing is not about imposing a voice. It is about helping the author discover the best version of their own.
What does Editorial VARCAR represent?
It represents the possibility of starting over.
We live in a country where reinventing yourself is not an option. It is a necessity. After many years of professional experience we decided to bring everything we had learned into a single project.
Editorial VARCAR was born to publish our books, support new authors and prove that authentic stories always find their way to their readers.
Why do you write?
I write because I believe institutions can disappear, cities can change and eras can end.
The only thing that remains are the stories people choose to tell one another. Every novel is an attempt to preserve that memory.

What comes next
Some end when the book closes. Others go on living in whoever read them. If one of my novels manages to stay with you long after the last page, then it will have fulfilled its purpose.
